Stinger Bug Zapper Review
The Stinger is a great little zapper that is small and lightweight enough to take with you to your favorite campgrounds or bring out in the backyard for a cookout or family gathering. It’s completely cordless and can run continuously for as long as 3.5 hours (in lantern mode).
This device users UV black-light technology to attract bugs within a 625 square foot radius and zap them for an instantaneous and effective kill. The Stinger insect killer is approved for use both outdoors and inside.
So, if you’re having troubles with flies in the house, you can quickly and safely set it up in the problematic area to greatly reduce the population of insects inside.
On top of operating as an insect killer the Stinger is also able to be used as a lantern. Powered by multiple, bright-white LED’s, the lantern-only mode is perfect for accent lighting. In this mode the device can last as long as 3 1/2 hours.
Every Stinger portable bug zapper comes equipped with a Nosquito Octenol lure which serves as an attractant to bring in mosquitoes, flies, and other flying insects to kill.
It is recommended that the unit be placed 10 to 14 feet away from people because it attracts large numbers of bugs.

Stinger Bug Zapper Kit
A truly invaluable product is one that receives positive feedback from real people that use it regularly. On Amazon you’ll find almost 300 reviews for the Stinger Cordless Insect Zapper. Of those, the majority have rated in favor of the device. It has managed to maintain a 3.5 out of 5 star rating.
Most people are fairly impressed with the performance of this particular zapper. Many were very happy that it can be used both indoors and outdoors (a lot of competing products can only be used outside). Others noted that it works well for killing insects in small areas like a porch or patio, but the unit isn’t powerful enough to handle a large yard.
Here’s a breakdown of the opinions of consumers on the Stinger:
- Very Affordable
- Easy to Move Around
- Works Indoors
- Each Charge Lasts 2-4 Hours
- Zaps Flies & Mosquitoes with Ease
- Short Charging Cord
- Doesn’t Work on All Insects
The main complaints associated with this device are the length of the charging cord and that it doesn’t work on insects such as bees and wasps. The cord is a bit short at only about 2 feet long, so you’ll probably want to use an extension cord if you need to charge it further away from the outlet.
As for bees and similar bugs, most zappers don’t work on these insects because they aren’t attracted to light.
Overall, this is an excellent portable bug zapper for the price. The Stinger is lightweight, the charge lasts a good bit, and it really puts a dent in the mosquito and fly populations in its vicinity.
Charging The Stinger Bug Zapper
The Stinger has a rechargeable, lithium-ion battery that provides enough juice to run for hours and lasts quite a while before needing to be replaced. In order to charge the device you simply need to attach it to the included power cord and have the cord plugged in to a standard wall outlet. It takes roughly 12 hours to achieve a full charge.
Each full charge can typically provide 2 to 4 hours of operation. Although the included instructions specifically state to not turn the zapper on while it’s charging, the unit will run even while plugged in. Doing so is not recommended, though, as this violates the manufacturer’s warranty.
Replaceable Bulbs and Lures
One of the great features of the Stinger Cordless Rechargeable Insect Zapper is that the bulbs are replaceable. Similar units have a single bulb that cannot be removed, requiring the user to purchase a whole new unit if the bulb dies. With the Stinger you can simply purchase BKC90 replacement 2-watt, black light bulbs, which are also available on Amazon for a great price.
Some people have reported that the zapper works just as well without the lure.
But if you want to you can purchase replacements for about $7. Stinger recommends replacing the lures every 30 days for optimal performance.
The Stinger uses Nosquito Octenol lures which work well for attracting mosquitoes, flies, and other airborne insects. These lures are EPA approved and are intended for outdoor use only. They are not approved for indoor use because of the risk or irritating the skin or eyes. Do NOT allow children or pets to get a hold of these, they are poisonous.
